7 Tips to Prepare your property for Autumn & Winter

Prepare your property for the cold dark winter evenings ahead

As temperatures continue to drop, it is highly advisable to Ensure that your property is properly sealed and well prepared for inclement weather. Looking after these tasks NOW will be much more advantageous than after a weather event that could damage your property.

  1. Checking Leaks – inspect your property NOW for any window seal or even roof leaks. If you notice staining in the eaves, it could be a good indicator of an ongoing leak or ingress of water. In this case, it is recommended that you make contact with a professional roof contractor to address and repair any leak issues before the winter sets in.

  1. Check your Gutters – After the next rain showers, make sure to inspect your gutters to ENsure that rain water is draining away from the property. Vegetation usually grows in gutters and valleys. If there is snow, any blockages in the gutters can cause ‘ice dams’ and potential water damage to the property. Before winter weather conditions worsen, take the necessary steps to turn off all outside water taps or garden hose connections. Also, drain hoses and store them in a shed or garage.

  1. Clean up overgrown vegetation – Take time now to clean up overgrown vegetation and trim any dead branches from the trees that are close to your property. Also, before you put the mower away, cut the lawn one last time.

  1. Clean and cover outdoor furniture – ENsure  that your clean out any grill and fire pit thoroughly. Cover or store any outdoor furniture to protect it from the elements and keep them in good condition for next season.

  1. Check any fireplaces – It is recommended that you contact a professional to inspect any fireplaces in the property, especially if it will be used during the winter. Avoid the unnecessary inconvenience of smoke filling up your home due to a neglected fireplace flue. Also, if you use your fireplace, ensure that you dispose of the ashes away from the property and by using a fireproof bucket.

  1. Check everything you’ll need for winter – ENsure that all items you will need for the winter are functioning properly and that any maintenance tools are to hand including spare bulbs, gas cylinders, a torch etc. Also, ENsure your outdoor nightlight / spotlight or security system components are working correctly.

  1. Maintenance Person – Ensure you have contacted your regular maintenance person and/or electrician or plumber to let them know you intend to call upon them in the case of an unlikely event this winter e.g. power outage / boiler issue.
